// SYSTEM LOG: DEFINITION
Bulletin Board System (BBS) games, also known as door games, were multiplayer text-based games that ran on dial-up bulletin board systems throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Played over modem connections, they pioneered online multiplayer gaming and built some of the earliest internet communities.
BBS "doors" were external programs launched directly from a BBS. Players connected via modem and took turns interacting with shared game worlds — true asynchronous multiplayer before the internet made it mainstream.
Titles like Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD) and Usurper let players battle monsters, challenge each other, and build characters — all in glorious ANSI text art.
TradeWars 2002 and Solar Realms Elite delivered deep space trading and combat strategy. Players managed fleets, built empires, and waged intergalactic war via 2400 baud modems.
Barren Realms Elite and Global War brought turn-based military strategy to the BBS scene — resource management, alliances, and conquest in pure ASCII glory.
BBS games pioneered ANSI art — colorful text-based graphics using escape codes. Entire communities of artists created elaborate title screens, menus, and interfaces that defined an era.
The BBS scene never died. Hundreds of active boards run worldwide via telnet, new door games are still being written, and classic titles remain in active daily play by a passionate global community.
